Newburgh-on-Ythan

The massively underrated Newburgh-on-Ythan is located only 15 miles from Aberdeen. Its back nine opened for play back in 1888 and is links golf at its fun and traditional best. Punchbowl greens, blind shots, fast-running fairways, pot bunkers – you’ll have to contend with them all. The front nine, meantime, is much newer but complements the older holes beautifully, offering fantastic views of the Ythan estuary, Forvie Sands, Newburgh Beach and the North Sea.

Stonehaven

Stonehaven claims to offer the best value for money golf in the North East of Scotland. It certainly provides one of the best courses. Located just 15 miles south of Aberdeen and only five miles from the new town of Chapleton of Elsick, it is by no means the longest course you will ever play but is quite possibly one of the most dramatic, with a number of holes being played over deep gullies and along steep cliff edges. It is impossible to play here and not have an absolute blast.

Fraserburgh

The James Braid-designed Corbie Hill course at Fraserburgh – roughly 40 miles to the north of Aberdeen – is one of Scotland’s best-kept secrets. Because of its location, at the far north east corner of Aberdeenshire, where the Moray Firth meets the North Sea, it is exposed to two different air currents. What does that mean for you, the golfer? Simple: when it’s windy, expect a thorough test of your talents. Whilst you’re there, be sure to have a go at its nine-hole sister course, the Rosehill.

Murcar Links

Sandwiched between Royal Aberdeen and Trump International Golf Links is Murcar Links, home to a beguiling, bewitching test that you’ll want to play again and again. Originally laid out by Archie Simpson and subsequently reworked by James Braid, you’ll find it on a classic stretch of linksland – just ten minutes north of Aberdeen city centre – framed by massive sand dunes. Throw in some seriously undulating fairways, whins, heather and sumptuous views across the North Sea and you have all the ingredients for a great day’s golf.
