Sergio Garcia has hinted he would welcome a return to the PGA Tour – should LIV Golf disband following golf’s shock merger.

Speaking to Sky Sports’ Jamie Weir before the US Open, Garcia appeared as uncertain as most other players about the precarious future of LIV following the PGA Tour’s extraordinary deal with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

The Spaniard, who resigned his membership from the DP World Tour to effectively rule himself out of Ryder Cup contention, now has a way back to the traditional tours as LIV rebels will soon be able to regain membership on the circuits they had been ostracised from.

And with huge questions surrounding the abrupt ceasefire between golf’s warring factions, LIV’s Fireballs GC captain Garcia is relieved a truce has been made.

Asked what he knows about the deal, Garcia said: “Not much. I wish I could tell you more but unfortunately not much.

“I guess things will come out as everything settles and stuff. At the end of the day, it is probably where we should have been from the beginning and I think it’s better for everyone, so that’s the most important thing.”

Garcia has been at the centre of controversy during the maelstrom that has erupted in golf in recent times.

The 2017 Masters champion has had a very public breakdown in friendship with Rory McIlroy, said he “can’t wait to leave” the PGA Tour in a rant before jumping ship for LIV, and was fined for walking out of the BMW Championship, the DP World Tour’s flagship event, without warning.

• Greg Norman: “We’re not going anywhere”

• Phil Mickelson’s LIV Golf team sued

But despite making his feelings known on golf’s main tours over the last 12 months, Garcia has confirmed he will consider a route back to the PGA Tour in the eventuality LIV ceases to exist.

“If there’s no LIV Golf of course I’ll have to go somewhere,” he admitted. “We’ll see. It doesn’t look like I’ll be able to do it this year unfortunately, it’s all speculation so we’ll find out more in the next few weeks.”
