A ferocious competitor, the Englishman clocked up more than 40 victories around the world – six of them majors – and spent 97 weeks at the top of the world rankings. In the Ryder Cup, he made a record-equalling 11 appearances for Europe, putting up 25 points in the process, and was deservedly inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1997.
