Wyndham Clark is $3.6 million richer after edging out Rory McIlroy to win the US Open.

The inspired Clark showed nerves of steel to hold off a challenge from McIlroy and hoist his maiden major title at the Los Angeles Country Club on Sunday.

Clark, the joint overnight leader, posted a final round 70 to prevail by one shot, with a gutsy two putt from 60ft on his 72nd hole to seal the trophy and make an emphatic major breakthrough.

McIlroy was left to rue an ice-cold putter as he finished one-shy, with Scottie Scheffler two shots further adrift after similar frustrations on the greens.

Rickie Fowler, who had shared the 54-hole lead with Clark, came up way short as he toiled with a final round 75.
