Wyndham Clark has emerged as golf’s latest superstar after his US Open win – but who is his caddie?

Wyndham Clark held off a challenge from Rory McIlroy to win his first major championship by one shot at the Los Angeles Country Club.

The American prevailed from a stacked leaderboard in the final round, holding his nerve brilliantly as the likes of Scottie Scheffler and Rickie Fowler faded away.

Clark’s best shot of the week perhaps came on the 612 par-5, where he crushed his 3-wood from the middle of the fairway onto the green and made the easiest of birdies.

It was a hole where McIlroy faltered with bogey, and Clark capitalised to put himself in pole position to win the US Open.

His 60ft lag putt on the 18th to leave himself a tap in to win the tournament was also mightily impressive.

And Clark’s job under the most intense pressure was made easier by the calming influence of his caddie – John Ellis.

Ellis is a former professional who played in two US Opens himself before becoming a bagman.

He was named the Canadian Open player of the year in 2008, but this was the first time he reached the weekend at the US Open after missing cuts himself during the same year and 2011, as well as two missed cuts whilst looping for Clark.

Ellis became an assistant coach at University of Oregon after his pro career stalled, where he met Clark following the American’s time at Oklahoma State.

The duo began their player-caddie relationship in 2016 and have stuck together since, with the highlight before the US Open glory coming a month earlier with the first PGA Tour win at the Wells Fargo Championship.

“I don’t think he’s gotten enough credit,” Ellis told reporters after the US Open. “He’s made 17 cuts in a row. He’s been playing some amazing golf, so I saw it even before we got here this week. I expected him to have a chance this week.”

Clark made his first ever Team USA Ryder Cup team after qualifying automatically after his incredible breakout year in 2023, meaning Ellis was on the bag for his first taste of the Ryder Cup.

And, as the 2024 Masters marked Clark’s first competitive start at Augusta National, his caddie Ellis made his Masters debut at the same time.
