She is an LPGA superstar and Solheim Cup veteran – but who is Lexi Thompson’s caddie?

Thompson has won 11 times on the LPGA Tour and has become one of the most marketable golf stars in the world.

But she has used various caddies throughout her garlanded career on the LPGA Tour.

As well as professionals, she has also employed family members to carry her bag whilst competing in tournaments around the world.

That’s included stints with her father Scott and brothers Nicholas and Curtis spending time on Thompson’s bag.

The late Kevin McApline – who died in 2023 aged 39 – also previously worked as Thompson’s caddie.

Who is Lexi Thompson’s caddie now?

Currently, Lexi Thompson’s caddie is Mark Wallington.

From Warrington, in England, he is a former professional rugby player, although a horrific leg injury ended his career in 2005.

So, in 2007, he began caddying and teamed up with former Ladies European Tour golfer, Breanne Loucks.

A few years later, he was carrying Swede Sophie Gustafson’s bag – including at the 2011 Solheim Cup.

But visa issues prevented the pair teaming up in 2012, so he turned to Caroline Hedwall before stints with Charley Hull, Lydia Ko and Emily Kristine Pedersen.

Other players Wallington has worked with include Carlota Ciganda, Carly Booth, Alice Hewson, and Maria Fassi.

Throughout his time on tour, he built a friendship with Thompson and it eventually led the pair together.

Thompson hired Wallington as her caddie at the 2024 Meijer LPGA Classic in June and finished T2 at the event.

“I’ve known him for a very long time and we’ve always had a very great friendship,” she said. “We get along so well; just never have worked together.

“I’ve always considered him one of my great friends out here that I go to, and vice versa. We always have a good laugh with each other and really look for each other in a friendship when needed.

“So I was like, you know what? This sounds great. Let’s just work together and see how it does.

“No matter what, we’ll always have that friendship and bond. That will never leave us.

“It ended up working out. He’s amazing out there for me. He’s very positive, and that’s what I need out there.”

The move came after Thompson teamed up with Colton Heisey in 2023, although they only lasted until the following year.

She had struggled for form in 2023, but put in some strong performances with Heisey on the bag towards the end of the season.

After those results, Heisey confirmed he would be caddying for Thompson for the 2024 season.

“I know many of my family and friends have been asking and wondering the last few months, who I would be working for in 2024,” he wrote on social media.

“With that being said, I would like to let everyone know that I will be working full time for Lexi Thompson.”

He continued: “I’m super grateful for the opportunity to work with one of the best to ever do it.

“Looking forward to a great season and doing everything I can to contribute to her success.”

Heisey had caddied for PGA Tour rookie Brandon Matthews before taking Lexi Thompson’s bag full-time in 2024.

Thompson confirmed it would be her last season after she announced her retirement in May. She shared the shock news ahead of her 18th start in the US Women’s Open.

“While it is never easy to say goodbye, it is indeed time,” the Florida-born golfer said, signing off a statement confirming her plans.”
