“Wrong day!”

It’s what we were all thinking as Viktor Hovland pulled off some absolute magic in Ryder Cup practice on Thursday.

The Norwegian star lit up the final practice session at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club by holing out from the tee on the short par-4 5th hole.

Hovland smashed his 3-wood into the 5th hole, which, at just over 300 yards, has been shortened around 70 years for this contest to make it reachable and become an ultimate matchplay hole.

His ball pitched about 15ft short of the flag and tracked right the way into the hole, prompting incredible scenes in Rome.

Hovland and his European playing partners on the tee had not actually realised what happened until hearing the cheers from the large galleries who had the perfect greenside view.

And the Sky Sports commentator nailed it when he repeatedly bellowed “Wrong day, wrong day!” Indeed. Save it for tomorrow, Viktor.

Unfortunately for Hovland, this cannot be counted as an official albatross. Firstly, because it wasn’t in tournament play and more importantly, because it wasn’t actually his first ball.

It was Hovland’s second shot into the green on the hole, as the FedEx Cup champion and his practice partners hit multiple approaches to get the best understanding of how to play it before go time on Friday.

• Team USA set for big share of support in Rome

That did not stop his playing partners on Thursday, Matt Fitzpatrick, Ludvig Aberg and Tyrrell Hatton on making the most out of the extraordinary moment, though.

Fitzpatrick, next up to play, immediately leapt on Hovland, who looked shocked at what he had just done.

Just imagine the scenes if this feat is repeated when the real action begins tomorrow….
