World No.1 and No.3 to go head-to-head in first round at Pebble Beach
In a repeat of last year’s Open Championship at Turnberry, Lee Westwood and Tiger Woods will tee off in the same group at the US Open.
The in-form Englishman, currently ranked third in the world, and the scandal-hit world No.1 will line up alongside South Africa’s two-time winner of the event, Ernie Els, at 1.36pm at Pebble Beach, California – 9.36pm in the UK.
Woods has struggled with his game since making his return earlier this year – with a missed cut, a withdrawal and just one top five at the Masters in April.
Westwood, on the other hand, id thriving, having come close at the Masters and at the unofficial fifth major, The Players Championship at Sawgrass, before securing his first win on US soil at the St Jude Classic in Memphis this weekend.
The last time the US Open was held a Pebble Beach, back in 2000, Woods took victory in record-breaking style, beating the field by four every day and winning by 15 strokes overall.
Meanwhile, world No.2 and reigning Masters champion Phil Mickelson lines up alongside three-time major winner Padraig Harrington and US PGA Champion Y.E. Yang, teeing off at 8.06am – 4.06pm for UK golf fans. Rory McIlroy, meantime, tees off at 1.47pm (9.47pm) with Ryo Ishikawa and veteran Tom Watson.
