A pairing with Shane Lowry agreed over a drunken lunch led to McIlroy’s 25th PGA Tour victory, a $1.286million winner’s cheque and an unforgettable rendition of Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin’.

The Irishmen defeated Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer in a playoff at TPC Louisiana on Sunday to win the only team event on the PGA Tour calendar.

Ramey and Trainer shot a nine-under 63 to set a target of -25, with McIlroy and Lowry showing great nerve to birdie the final hole and force sudden death.

The Ryder Cup heroes then parred the first play-off hole, which was enough to secure victory.
