Bryson DeChambeau is the latest golfer to add their name to the very exclusive sub-60 club and he did it with a driver you might not recognise.

The big-hitting American carded a remarkable final round of 58 at LIV Golf Greenbrier, joining a short list of players to break the magical number of 60 and an even shorter number to break 59.

Remarkably, DeChambeau wasn’t far away from breaking the 60 barrier twice in as many days. In his second round at the Old White Course, the 29-year-old carded a 61, meaning he played the weekend in just 119 blows.

DeChambeau did all this with 13 birdies and a bogey, while missing only two greens. He also averaged just over 345 yards off the tee in the final round.

Never one to do things the conventional way, it should be no shock that Bryson’s entry into the history books comes with an interesting back story, this time relating to his equipment.

DeChambeau has always been a player who likes to tinker with his gear and this week, his bag featured a driver and fairway wood (pictured below) from Krank Golf, a brand who specialise in making clubs for World Long Drive competitors.

The specific driver that Bryson has in play is the Krank Golf Formula Fire LD, a model which features, according to Krank’s website, the only Adjustable Super Hardened Beta Titanium Cupped Face Forged Driver. Bryson’s specific model featured just six degrees of loft.

Basically, this driver has an incredibly firm face, designed for those with very high swing speeds, something that Bryson certainly has. In the past, he’s cruised at around 180mph ball speed, a number which will roughly translate to 350 yards off the tee.

Following his second round at LIV Golf Greenbrier, Bryson had this to say on the club.

“It’s a great driver. It’s won a bunch of World Long Drive championships. It’s probably performed the best I’ve ever had in the past five years in professional golf for me, ever since 2018 when I was striping it early in the year. I don’t want to say too much. It’s fantastic for anyone that’s over 175mph ball speed.”

Although it’s a club that is built for distance, DeChambeau, who won his first LIV Golf event courtesy of his weekend performance, highlighted that it helped him with his accuracy off the tee, too.

“Ever since I put this driver into play, it’s not been really my golf swing. It’s just hit on the toe, hit on the heel, everything comes back down the middle of the fairway, and I’m like, all right, let’s go, pick up the tee and let’s go.

“The driver has been really nice. It’s allowed me to have some time to myself after rounds instead of going and working my butt off all the time.”
