McEwan and Co. gearing up to tackle four rounds in one day for charity

Stage is set: Michael McEwan will attempt to play 72 holes of golf at Gleneagles in just one day for charity

The assistant editor of bunkered, Michael McEwan, is joining hundreds of golfers across the country by taking part in the Longest Day Golf Challenge 2013 on behalf of Macmillan Cancer Support.

McEwan, pictured below, along with friends Stuart Greig, Finlay Morrison and Stevie Reffin, will attempt to play 72 holes in just one day on June 22 this year at The Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, host venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup.

The quartet are anticipating the challenge will take them up to 18 hours to complete and they are hoping their efforts will be rewarded by people digging deep to sponsor them, with all proceeds going to Macmillan.

“Taking on the Longest Day Challenge is something I’ve been keen to do for a while now,” said McEwan. “Over the past few years, I’ve read countless emails from readers who have given it a go and, without exception, they have all raved about how much they enjoyed it.

“I love a challenge. I’ve done a couple of marathons over the past few years, so the Longest Day Golf Challenge is something I’m absolutely up for, and I know the other three guys feel the same.

“We’re all keen golfers and close mates so I’m sure it will be a fun – albeit tiring – day.”

The Longest Day Golf Challenge is billed as ‘the toughest challenge in golf’. It incorporates 72 holes, an estimated 300 shots and close to 20 miles in terms of total distance covered per player.

Anyone can enter, providing they are able to cobble together a team of four, find a venue – or venues – willing to host them and raise money for Macmillan through sponsorship. Last year’s Longest Day Golf Challenge raised over £500,000 across the UK, with just under 500 teams nationwide taking part. However, organisers are hopeful those figures will be exceeded this summer.

The longest day this year is June 21 but there is enough daylight between May and August to complete four rounds so you can choose whichever date fits best for you and your team.

“Raising money for such a deserving cause is a brilliant incentive for us to complete the challenge,” added McEwan. “The fact that the Gleneagles Hotel has been kind enough to agree to host us is the icing on the cake. It is a simply superb golf destination and one of my favourite places to play. It’s going to be a great experience.”

DONATE & WIN

Everyone who donates a minimum sponsorship of £10 to Michael and his team will go into a prize draw to win a two-night break for two to the fantastic Royal Hotel in Oban. The break includes dinner, bed and breakfast on both days for both people, and is redeemable seven days a week subject to availability. To be in with a chance of winning, just donate £10 or more to Michael’s challenge at www.justgiving.com/fantasticfore

The prize draw will be made on Monday, June 24th.
