Spaniard will take time off from competitive golf
Spanish star Sergio Garcia is set to take a two-month break from competitive golf following the USPGA Championship, which could rule him out of the European team for the Ryder Cup.
Garcia, who hasn’t won on tour for nearly two years, will miss the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup play-offs and the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles – the last event before automatic places for the Ryder Cup are finalised.
This means that unless he finishes among the top three at whistling Straits, he will have to rely on a wild card pick from European captain Colin Montgomerie, along with a list of other star names.
The 30-year-old confirmed he will not return to competition until the end of October for the Castellon Masters on his home course in Spain.
“It’s been a long year,” he said. “I haven’t had a nice long break in my whole career.
“I need the break, I need to miss the game a little bit. I’ve talked to him . He knows what I’m planning to do.”
