Scots tour star encourages country’s kids to get into golf this summer

Child’s play: Scott Jamieson is backing the ClubGolf Camps, taking place across Scotland this summer

Scott Jamieson, currently the No.1-ranked Scot on the European Tour’s Race to Dubai, is calling on the nation’s juniors to play their part in an exciting summer of golf by signing-up for ClubGolf Camps, taking place across the country during the month of July.

The 29-year-old helped to launch the first staging of the national junior programme’s summer camps in 2012, alongside Scotland footballers Scott Brown and Steven Whittaker, and was delighted to see more than 53 clubs and around 800 children participate.

This time around, with 82 host clubs on board and spaces for well over 1,000 children to get involved, this year’s Nelson Mandela Championship victor is hopeful of an even greater uptake before the June 9 deadline for registration expires.

“I’m delighted that ClubGolf Camps are returning in 2013 for what looks set to be the biggest and best ever summer for young golfers in Scotland,” said Jamieson, who honed his skills as a junior at his home club Cathkin Braes.

“After helping to launch the camps in 2012, it was fantastic that they introduced so many youngsters to golf through a fun and exciting format, which involves lots more than just swing tuition.

“With even more host camps signed-up and an even greater number of spaces for kids to get involved this year, the summer ahead is a very exciting prospect.”

ClubGolf Camps kick-start the jam-packed ClubGolf Festival; a calendar of events taking place over the course of this summer. This includes The Big Chipping Challenge, part of the ClubGolf @ the Castle programme being delivered during the week of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Castle Stuart.

Timed to coincide with the first weeks of the school holidays, the ClubGolf Festival presents opportunities for children to participate in activities at all of the major professional golf events to be staged in Scotland in 2013, such as The Open Championship at Muirfield.

Open to young people between the ages of 9-13 at a cost of £40 for a full week of coaching (10am-2pm daily), ClubGolf Camps will instil the basic principles of the golf swing through progressive, games-based activities.

PGA-qualified professionals and coaches will deliver the sessions alongside ClubGolf volunteers, all of whom are coaching the wider ClubGolf programme at clubs and facilities.

In providing the perfect atmosphere for youngsters to flourish, Jamieson is confident camps will give kids the ideal first stepping stone into golf.

“I’d like to encourage all young golfers to join a camp near them as the perfect start to the school holidays,” he added.

“ClubGolf Camps certainly would have been something I would have loved to have been involved in as a kid and I’m sure that everyone involved will take away lots of new skills and great memories from the week.”
