Americans in seventh heaven after winning Curtis Cup by five points
It was yet another disappointing year for Great Britain and Ireland in the Curtis Cup – with the US recording their seventh consecutive victory in the event.
The US side, featuring 15-year-old prodigy Alexis Thompson who is expected to turn pro following the event, soared to a comfortable 12½ – 7½ win at Essex Country Club in Massachusetts.
Thompson and Jennifer Johnson both built up impressive early leads in their singles matches, with Scotland’s Sally Watson, who will take part in the US Women’s Open next month, on the wrong end of a 6 and 5 defeat to Thompson.
However, it was Johnson’s 5 and 4 victory over England’s beat Rachel Jennings that clinched it for the Americans.
Mary McKenna’s side’s hopes of victory began to fade following a US 6-0 whitewash in the fourball and foursomes sessions, totally eclipsing the lead established by GB&I on day one.
Scotland’s other representative, Pamela Pretswell lost her singles match to Jessica Korda, however, the Scottish girls did give a good account of themselves on the opening day.
Both Pretswell and Watson picked up a point in the Friday fourballs alongside partners Danielle McVeigh and Lisa Maguire, while Watson and partner Rachel Jennings halved her Friday morning foursomes match.
