PAUL LAWRIE MATCH PLAY

Ryder Cup hopeful Matt Fitzpatrick will take on vice-captain for Hazeltine Thomas Bjorn in the glamour tie of round one of the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play.

The young Englishman, who has suffered a drop in form in recent weeks at this crucial stage of the year, will have the perfect chance to show Bjorn what he’s made of as the pair do battle over the Fidra Course at Archerfield Links at 2.15pm tomorrow.

“So Darren I’m sure will be loving that draw!” – Paul Lawrie

And tournament host Lawrie, a fellow Ryder Cup vice-captain alongside Bjorn, is relishing the prospect of seeing Fitzpatrick in action against the Dane.

“It’s amazing how the draw has come out with young Matt up against Thomas,” Paul Lawrie told bunkered.co.uk. “So he’s going to see Matt up close, in matchplay competition and situation. So Darren I’m sure will be loving that draw!

“There are three boys here with a chance of playing the Ryder Cup who are in the field so it’s a great experience for them playing competitive golf in a matchplay environment is all good.”

The tie of the morning round is undoubtedly Scot Richie Ramsay up against two-time Ryder Cup player David Howell – who finished third at Murcar Links last year.

“I’m not 100% fit” – Paul Lawrie

Lawrie, meanwhile, is up against Danish starlet Lucas Bjerregaard and admits he’s struggling with an injury heading into the week.

“I’m not 100% fit,” he added. “My neck is not very good. I played nine holes this morning but I’ll see how I am. I’m not far away to be fair but my results have been very poor. I’ll need to play well on Thursday because Lucas is one of our up and coming players so it’ll be tough but I’m looking forward to it.”
