PGA Tour player Erik Compton has been arrested over a domestic dispute in his Florida home.

Compton was detained last weekend by Miami-Dade police on misdemeanour domestic violence and felony charges.

The 43-year-old golfer was allegedly involved in a verbal argument with his wife in his Miami home on August 19.

In a report by Miami station WSVN, Compton is alleged to have took his wife’s phone and thrown it into a swimming pool before grabbing her by the shoulder and throwing her into a wall.

It is claimed in the reports that Compton’s wife then left the premises and called the police at a nearby friend’s house.

Compton was later arrested on a strong-armed robbery charge and a misdemeanour battery charge.

The American is a journeyman of professional golf, who has played on developmental tours as well as the PGA Tour circuit.

He is currently ranked 1,065 in the world rankings and made the cut in both his PGA Tour starts this season, finishing T29 at the Corales Puntacana Championship and T3 at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Compton has victories on the Canadian Tour, Korn Ferry Tour and NGA Hooters Tour, but has never managed to establish himself on the PGA Tour.

He was diagnosed with viral cardiomyopathy as a child, a condition that has required two heart transplants for him to overcome.

His first heart transplant was aged 12 back in 1992 and he had his second aged 28 in 2008.
