BOO WEEKLEY | PGA TOUR

Former Ryder Cup player Boo Weekley has launched a scathing attack on the current schedule of the PGA Tour – branding it ‘stupid’ and that it ‘sucks’.

The 42-year-old, a three-time PGA Tour winner, didn’t hold back when asked about the wraparound season, which started at the Frys.com Open three weeks ago, just three weeks after the conclusion of the FedEx Cup and the 2015 season.

“Honestly, this wraparound season sucks,” said Weekley, whose last win came at the Crowne Plaza Invitational in May 2013. “It does, seriously. It’s just stupid.”

And it didn’t end there, with the American condemning the format of the FedEx Cup, as well as PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem, criticising how little input the players have in how the tour is scheduled.

“I still ain’t figured out this FedEx – what does this FedEx stuff do?” he said. “It ain’t doing nothing , but it is what it is. It’s supposed to be the players’ tour. It’s Tim Finchem and them’s tour is what it is.

“It’s just golf after golf after golf. Ain’t no time for hunting and fishing, man. You know, you’ve got to come in here and bring my rods over here to go fishing, but you can’t go fishing because you get out there and next thing you know somebody’s aggravating you, and you can’t actually enjoy going fishing.”

But Weekley, whose best finish at a major was a tie for ninth at the 2007 US PGA Championship, says the schedule can be beneficial to rookies, as evidenced by Emiliano Grillo and Smylie Kaufman both grabbing wins in the opening two events of the season.

“It’s aggravating having to play this much, but yet it’s important to come out and try to get a good start. I mean, it’s good for the rookies, I think. They can get their feet wet before they actually get into the bigger tournaments. I think that’s a good thing.”
