Justin Thomas looks set to be awarded with a show of faith by captain Zach Johnson with a place in the US Ryder Cup team.

Johnson is ready to include out-of-form Thomas as one of his six wildcard picks on Tuesday, according to The Guardian.

The experience and popularity of the 30-year-old in the locker room appears to have swayed Johnson’s decision as he finalises his American team for the showdown near Rome.

Thomas has missed five of his last eight cuts, shot two rounds in the 80s in his last two majors and failed to make the FedEx Cup playoffs.

But a stellar record of 16-5-3 across Ryder Cups and Presidents Cup makes him one of the most formidable match players of his time and he will be backed by Johnson to find his form at Marco Simone.

USA skipper Johnson is also set to avoid huge controversy by naming LIV golfer Brooks Koepka in his 12-man team.

Koepka narrowly slipped out of the automatic berths in the final qualifying event but will play in his fourth Ryder Cup, despite Johnson barely acknowledging LIV players throughout his selection process.

The PGA Championship winner almost secured his place in the team via strong major performances alone this season and is another popular presence in the locker room.

Jordan Spieth did not qualify automatically but is seen as another shoo-in, while Rickie Fowler also looks set to get the nod as a reward for his resurgence over the past 12 months.

Collin Morikawa’s likely inclusion then leaves one spot remaining for Johnson to complete his team. Sam Burns, Cameron Young and Keegan Bradley are all in contention for the final spot.

Johnson officially confirms his six wildcard selections at 3pm on Tuesday 29 August.
