Dunbar

Touched by the genius of three of Scotland’s most influential golf course designers – Old Tom Morris, James Braid and Ben Sayers – Dunbar is a fabulous championship course located on the banks of the Firth of Forth. The stretch of holes from the fourth to the 17th play close to the sea – in several cases, right up against it – providing an authentic and memorable links test. The scenery is stunning and a friendly welcome awaits in the clubhouse, too. All in all, it’s a fabulous place to visit.

North Berwick

Golf has been played over the historic West Links in North Berwick as far back as the 17th century, so, if it’s a genuine, historic links experience you’re looking for, you don’t need to look much further. Sumptuous views of the Firth of Forth and the islands of Bass Rock, Craigleith, Lamb and Fidra are complemented by a quirky, world-class layout that is a shot-maker’s dream. It’s easy to see why this is so many people’s favourite Scottish course.

Eyemouth

Perched on top of Gunsgreen Hill in the Borders fishing village from which it takes its name, Eyemouth might not be as well-known as some of its contemporaries. However, there are two things that set it apart. Its sixth hole – a stunning par-3 over a deep ravine – was once voted ‘Britain’s Most Extraordinary Golf Hole’, whilst its 13th, brilliantly dubbed ‘The Hawkness Monster’, is one of Scotland’s longest holes, measuring 656 yards from the back tees. One for the itinerary, for sure.

The Hirsel

Tucked away on the edge of the beautiful Hirsel Estate in the Scottish Borders, The Hirsel Golf Club in Coldstream is a wonderful surprise. Affectionately nicknamed ‘The Augusta of the Borders’ for the fine condition in which it is kept and the colourful flowers that flank many holes at the height of the season, it is an absolute joy to play. The par-3 sixth is one of the finest short holes in the country and, speaking of Augusta, calls to mind the iconic 12th at the host venue for The Masters.
