• Sergio Garcia blasts fans who heckled him at the Players
• “Some guys don’t deserve to be here watching golf”
• Finished runner-up after a play-off with Fowler and Kisner

SERGIO GARCIA

Sergio Garcia claimed that some fans shouldn’t be allowed to be out watching golf after he was heckled throughout his final round at the Players Championship.

The 35-year-old lost out to Rickie Fowler in a three-way play-off at TPC Sawgrass and was clearly unimpressed with the goings-on out on the course, but insisted that it didn’t affect any of his shots.

“Some guys don’t deserve to be here watching golf” – Sergio Garcia

“It was great for the most part,” Sergio Garcia said. “Obviously, some guys there that don’t deserve to be here watching golf, but that’s what it is. It was probably about three or four times on every hole since the tenth hole.

“I wouldn’t say that , no. They shouted at the wrong time on top of the ball, so I was able to back away. When I get in contention, it wasn’t really .”

Martin Kaymer’s caddie Craig Connelly added weight to Garcia’s claims by saying that it wasn’t just Sunday that the Spaniard was heckled. He tweeted:

Despite losing out to Fowler in a play-off which also included Kevin Kisner, while recording the 14th runner-up finish of his career in the process, Garcia said he couldn’t be disappointed with his performance at the tournament.

Two shots ahead of the field at the start of the back nine, Garcia then bogeyed the 14th but responded with birdies at the 16th and 17th to force a play-off against Fowler, who was six-under through his final six holes, and Kisner, who was three-under for the back nine.

Garcia was then eliminated after the three-hole play-off following a bogey at the 18th, but said he was happy with how he played during the final round.

THE PLAYERS Championship - Final Round

“I played nicely,” Sergio Garcia said. “I hit a lot of good shots today, I hit a lot of good putts. And it’s a shame. Obviously, I thought I had hit a great putt on 18 now, it just didn’t break as much as I thought.

“But overall, it was another good week here at the Players. I gave away a lot of shots and still almost won this tournament, so I can’t be disappointed.”

The Players was the second time Sergio Garcia has been in real contention for a PGA Tour title this season, after finishing fourth at the Northern Trust Open back in February.
