Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are the bookies’ joint favourites to win The Masters, the 87th edition of which gets under way at Augusta National Golf Club next week.

Defending champion Scheffler and history-hunting McIlroy – who squared off in the consolation match at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Championship yesterday – are priced around 15/2 by most bookmakers.

• The Masters: Four more players secure invites

• Sandy Lyle confirms tour retirement

World No.1 Scheffler is bidding to become just the fourth player to successfully defend the Green Jacket (Jack Nicklaus, Sir Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods being the others), whilst McIlroy is out to become only the sixth golfer to complete the career grand slam. This will be the Irishman’s eighth attempt at completing the major haul.

Jon Rahm, the world No.2, is priced only marginally longer than those two players. You can get him at 8/1 currently.

There’s then a bit of a jump down to the fourth betting favourite, Jordan Spieth, who is currently going at 18/1.

At the opposite end of the book, you can get odds of 5,000/1 on Sandy Lyle, the 1988 champion, signing off his tour career with a victory, whilst two-time champion Jose Maria Olazabal is at 4,000/1.

• Player against tour return for LIV rebels

Intriguing, Sam Burns, the winner of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, is still priced at 40/1 with some bookies, despite his recent victory. The American missed the cut on his Masters debut last year.

Speaking of first-timers, the player reckoned to have the best chance of becoming the first golfer to win on their Masters debut since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979 is Tom Kim. You’ll find him at 66/1, with Sahith Theegala at 100/1 and Arnold Palmer Invitational winner Kurt Kitayama at 150/1.
