If you want a measure of the 18th at Carnoustie, just ask Padraig Harrington, who won the Open there in 2007. Ahead of the 2018 championship, the Irishman called it “the toughest finishing hole in championship golf” and “one of those holes that keeps you awake at night”. Yeah – it’s that tough. You’ve got OOB left, water left, water right, water short, OOB beyond the green, deep bunkers, thick rough. As Harrington says: “You’ve got to hit the shots. Get a good drive away, get it in the fairway, get a mid-iron on it and stick it in the middle of that green.” Simple, eh?
