The 2024 US Open will return to a familiar venue with plenty of major championship history.

Pinehurst No. 2 will host the US Open for the fourth time in 25 years as it will stage the 124th edition of the tournament.

It will mark the first time in over a century that the USGA has awarded four Opens to the same site within a 25-year span.

The championship will also mark the 25th anniversary of Payne Stewart’s success in the 1999 US Open, when he edged Phil Mickelson by one stroke.

Pinehurst was most recently used for the US Open in 2014, when Martin Kaymer won the national championship by eight shots.

He became the first German, and first player from Continental Europe, to claim the US Open.

It was also used in 2005, when Michael Campbell beat by Tiger Woods by two strokes to lift the famous trophy.

The 2024 US Open will be the 11th USGA championship to be held at the Donald Ross design, which was restored by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in 2010.

Rivalled only by Pebble Beach as America’s most historic championship course, Pinehurst will once again provide a routine US Open test.

Pinehurst became the first course to host the men’s and women’s US Open back-to-back, and for good reason.

• Who is Matt Fitzpatrick’s caddie?

With famous ‘turtle-back greens’ with small landing areas, even the best players in the world will have their shot-making decisions challenged.

That was the case aside from the US Open too, as Pinehurst Resort and Country Club has also hosted the 1936 PGA Championship, the 1951 Ryder Cup, and the 1991 and 1992 Tour Championships.

The USGA President also announced that the US Open will consistently feature at Pinehurst in the future.

The US Open will head back to North Carolina for the 2029, 2035, 2041, and 2047 editions of the championship.
