It can be easy to forget that there’s an important PGA Tour event taking place underneath the party of the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

However, there absolutely is, and it’s almost certainly the most important edition of the WM Phoenix Open.

While the week might be billed as one of the biggest parties in golf, it has a serious edge to it as well. It’s the first of the full-field elevated events on the PGA Tour in 2023, so it will be interesting to see how things play out on that front.

There’s 22 of the top 25 players and eight from the top ten in the OWGR in the field, including Rory McIlroy, who will be making his first PGA Tour start since October.

Of course, the first thing everyone thinks of when they think of the Waste Management is the 16th hole. The par-3 has been host to some pretty ludicrous moments down the years: Tiger’s ace, Harry Higgs and Joel Dahmen last year, and some wild hole-in-one celebrations courtesy of Sam Ryder and Carlos Ortiz last year.

It was Scottie Scheffler who won in 2022, a common theme from this time last year, after he beat Patrick Cantlay in a playoff.

The event has been sponsored by Waste Management since 2010, and has been a fixture on the PGA Tour since 1932.

Tony Finau

In such a stacked field, it’s hard to find value, but the red-hot 33-year-old is decent odds at 25/1. He made a playoff here back in 2020, where Webb Simpson got the better of him. He won three times in the second half of 2022, don’t be surprised if he keeps picking up wins in 2023.
