Ewen Ferguson enjoyed the ultimate reward as he opted for the unorthodox approach at the Porsche European Open.
Two-time DP World Tour winner Ferguson eliminated the troubles often associated with a greenside bunker shot – by simply using a putter.
The Scot has been using the flatstick to negotiate the shallow sand traps around the Green Eagle North Course in Hamburg this week.

The bunkers around the greens in Hamburg are a far cry from the intimidating traps that will face the world’s best players at Royal Liverpool at The Open this July.
But there is still surely some element of trepidation using a putter from a bunker when the stakes are high during a DP World Tour event.
Not for Ferguson though, it seems.
The 26-year-old putted from the sand in Thursday’s first round, leaving himself six foot for par, before missing to card a frustrating bogey five during his two-under round of 71.

That would not deter him in Friday’s second round however, and this time he went one better.
He pulled out the putter again in the greenside bunker on the par-3 14th, his fifth hole of the day, with even more jeopardy as he was hitting towards the water.
But Ferguson judged his shot perfectly and saw his aggressive stroke track right into the hole to record a glorious birdie two.

Ferguson is chasing his third victory on the European circuit this week after a breakthrough year in 2022 with victories at the Qatar Masters and ISPS Handa World Invitational.
Don’t be surprised to see him take out the putter whilst in the bunker once more if in contention this weekend after his impressive success from the sand.
