Ready for some match play? It’s time for another big week with the WGC.
The players are at Austin Country Club for a pretty significant edition of the event. If reports are to be believed this could be the last edition of the Match Play for a while, so we had better enjoy it while we can.
The top 64 in the world that are eligible and opt in to play this week will tee it up. Justin Thomas and Justin Rose are the two who would have been eligible who have decided to take the week off.
Those players will be split into 16 groups of four players each, for rounds one, two and three, held Wednesday to Friday. Each win in the group stage is worth one point and a halved match is worth a half point, there’s no extra holes if the match is all square after 18. If there’s a tie at the top of the group, a stroke play hole-by-hole playoff will be played until there’s a winner, who will advance to the knockout stages.
Last year, Scottie Scheffler won here, which propelled him to world No.1 for the very first time. That was after he beat Kevin Kisner in the championship match with a pretty resounding scoreline of 4&3.
The course here will get plenty of attention, with plenty of risk/reward holes in play, as well as the iconic 12th hole with the bridge across Lake Austin in full view.
The event has been a fixture since 1999 and has been sponsored by Dell since 2016.
Here’s all the details.

Thanks to its format, a certain kind of player does well in this WGC and the former world No.1 fits the bill. Day is finding form again and has won the Match Play twice, the most recent one being at Austin. While he’ll need to beat strong players along the way, he’s a great outside bet.
🚨 #COMMITTED — Rickie Fowler has officially committed to the WGC Match Play. This will be his first time playing in Austin since 2016. 👀 pic.twitter.com/vlACkmSQDh
