The 2023 Solheim Cup is edging ever closer – but who will be the European captain for the biennial contest against the USA?

This year’s Solheim Cup will be held from 22-24 September at the Finca Cortesin in the Malaga town of Casares.

And the responsibility of leading the European team to a third successive victory over the Americans will be Suzann Pettersen.

• Venue for 2026 Solheim Cup announced

Suzann Pettersen will captain Europe for the first time in the Solheim Cup in this September’s showdown in Andalucia.

Pettersen represented Europe nine times in the Solheim Cup and famously secured the match-winning point in her final match as a player in 2019.

The Norwegian has twice assumed the role of vice-captain in the Solheim Cup and helped Catriona Matthew’s side seal a famous away victory over USA in 2021.

The Solheim Cup is traditionally a biennial event, but will be played again in 2024 in Virginia so it no longer clashes with the Ryder Cup after schedules were altered during the pandemic.

And Pettersen has also been given the honour of captaining the European side in 2024, meaning she has the unique scenario where she can build a strong core of her team for two editions of the Solheim Cup.

• US Solheim Cup captain confirmed

It was confirmed that Pettersen would continue leading the team in 2024, regardless of the outcome in Andalucia, back in February.

“I love the Solheim Cup and it’s such a unique honour to be asked to captain Team Europe again in 2024,” she said, reacting to the news.

“Being offered the role for a second time before the 2023 matches have even been played is a little different to usual, as we usually play the competition every two years and announce the next captain after the competition, but because of the changes to the schedule and having back-to-back Solheim Cups in consecutive years, it makes perfect sense.

“So far, my 2023 captaincy has been a pure joy so to be able to lead the team in Europe this year and then again next year in the US, near the nation’s capital, will be a great honour.”
