Tony Finau has become one of the PGA Tour’s top players, so who is his coach?
Since his rookie season on the circuit in 2014, Finau has racked up multiple wins and featured on US Ryder and Presidents Cup teams.
He enrolled the services of caddie Mark Urbanek in 2016, but the team taking Finau to the top stretches further than his looper.
While Finau is the one who hits the shots, there is one man who has shaped Finau’s game – and that is his coach Boyd Summerhays.
Finau’s relationship with Summerhays began in 2016, when Finau called him for a lesson.
Subsequently, the coach agreed and the duo have worked together since.
Once the top ranked junior golfer in the States, Summerhays turned his playing expertise to coaching.
He played professionally on the PGA Tour between 2004 and 2006, but didn’t pursue playing as a career. Struggling with a back injury, he played just 29 events and called quits on his playing days.
Working with Finau since he was 14-years-old, the pair’s families have become close friends, including Boyd’s son, Preston.
Having played in several Tour events, he says that he has played with Tony Finau over 100 times in his career.
Boyd is also the older brother of Daniel Summerhays, who won over $8.9m on the PGA Tour.
• Who is the coach of Cameron Smith?
His grandfather, Pres Summerhays, was the head golf coach at the University of Utah, while his father, Lynn, played collegiate golf, and for several years served as President of the Utah Junior Golf Association and on the USGA Committee.
Bruce Summerhays, Boyd’s uncle, is a Champions Tour winner and was also an accomplished golf instructor, while his cousin Carrie is a former LPGA Tour player.
Finau’s coach, who has also worked with Talor Gooch and Wyndham Clark, told Golf.com how good Finau’s game is.
He said: “One thing that really sets Tony apart is his power and athleticism.
“There’s no doubt he has always had a physical advantage. He’s one of the finest athletes on the PGA Tour. It’s something we don’t take for granted.”
Sharing the secrets to get the best out of his player, Summerhays ensures Finau isn’t on the range for three to four hours at a time.
He added: “When you’re playing 4-5 weeks in a row, you’re not going to be able to sustain that. You’re already playing 4-5 hour rounds, you play a practice round, you’re putting in a workout, you’re traveling city to city.
“When we’re at the golf course we have a nice clean, efficient practice.”
Meanwhile, details are unclear of another recent addition to Finau’s team, but he did provide some insight at the 2024 PGA Championship.
He skipped the inaugural Black Desert Championship in his home state in 2024, so that he could coach junior golfers.
The Utah-born golfer was the assistant coach for the Thanksgiving Point All-Stars team, which competed at the National Car Rental PGA Junior League Championship.
