World No.1 will defend Bridgestone Invitational title

Tiger Woods will defend his title at the Bridgestone Invitational next month, it has been announced.

The world No.1 has entered the event, due to be staged at Firestone the week before the US PGA Championship, the final major of the year.

The 34-year-old’s victory in the World Golf Championship last year saw him become the seven-time winner of the event, having won every year at Firestone since 2005, except in 2008 when he missed the second half of the season due to knee surgery.

That win, which saw Woods rally against three-time major winner Padraig Harrington, also made him the first player to win a PGA Tour event seven times on the same course.

Woods’ US compatriot Anthony Kim will also play in the event from August 5-8, his first tournament since undergoing thumb surgery in May.
