to ten

An old one but a good one, counting to ten is probably the first stress-busting technique you are ever taught. Why is it so effective? In the words of Dr Alan Comeau, a top behavioural psychologist, it “gives us the time that is needed to consider the merits of our immediate and instinctual tendencies and also to consider and measure alternate types of responses  to stressful situations”. In other words, it stops you from impulsively reacting or, in the case of golf, hitting your next shot too quickly.
