Tour pro hints displeasure at Final Series

Pelle Edberg has hinted his displeasure with the European Tour after three players were granted invites to the BMW Masters – with him sitting third on the reserve list for the tournament.

Victorious Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley and two-time major winner John Daly have both received invites to the event in Shanghai, as has Justin Rose, with Edberg, who finished 71st on this season’s Race to Dubai, taking to Twitter to voice his concerns.

The Swede, who has three top five finishes this season including a runner-up spot at the Czech Masters, said:

The entry list specifies that up to four invitations are permitted for the event, the penultimate on the Final Series of the Race to Dubai, but in previous seasons it was always the first of the four in the Final Series. McGinley has played every year since its debut in 2012, while Daly is making only his fourth start this season in a regular European Tour tournament.

Edberg’s frustration comes at a time when radical changes are expected on the setup and scheduling of the European Tour, with chief executive Keith Pelley due to reveal the changes upon the conclusion of the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai next Sunday.

Among the possible changes is an alteration of the Final Series, while World Golf Championship and majors may be dropped as counting events for membership, with players instead having to play in five regular events to keep their status be eligible for a Ryder Cup place.
