Woods won his first PGA Tour title on October 6, 1996, at the Las Vegas Invitational. He shot a final round of 64 to finish on 27-under-par and tied with Davis Love III after the five rounds of the tournament. Twenty-year-old Woods then defeated his future Ryder Cup captain at the first extra hole of a sudden death play-off. It was his fifth PGA Tour start as a professional and earned him a cheque for $297,000.
