He’s one of the longest hitters in the game, but how far does Rory McIlroy actually hit the golf ball?

The four-time major champion is a big attraction wherever he plays and for good reason. He hits it absolutely miles, and not just with his driver. He is consistently long all the way through his bag.

It’s not uncommon for McIlroy to drive par-4 holes – and during the third round of the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational he even became the first player to find the tenth green at Bay Hill from the tee since 2003 when his 365-yard effort found the putting surface.

The new TaylorMade Qi10 driver seems to be working for him so far this year after changing from LS model earlier in the year so we can expect some big things in the remainder of the season.

While having the ability to drive a green has the wow factor, what’s more impressive is just how much control he has of his golf ball at his speeds.

McIlroy sits in the top ten of the fastest PGA Tour players with an average swing speed of 123mph which is what allows him to generate the fast ball speeds and hit drives which carry the 340-yards mark. His spin rate average will be around the 2300RPM with his TaylorMade TP5x which is what gives him the control and distance he wants.

What allows McIlroy to hit the ball so far is not only his ability to swing it fast, but the ability to produce an average of 186mph ball speed.

Another contributing factor to this is gym work. He’s no stranger to a good workout and with the right routines and programmes he can gain and maintain the strength, speed and power needed to hit the ball long and straight.

Now when we do see the freak long drives there are other variables like wind, altitude, and downhill gradients – but you can’t deny the distances are impressive.

• What’s in Rory McIlroy’s bag?

So, the big question is how far does Rory McIlroy hit the golf ball on average? Let’s take a closer look…

Rory McIlroy stock yardages

Thanks to our friends at TaylorMade, we have all the numbers…

  • Qi10 driver: 325-yards
  • Qi10 3-wood: 295-yards
  • P760 3-iron: 258-yards
  • Prototype 4-iron: 245-yards *new addition
  • Rors Proto 5-iron: 225-yards
  • Rors Proto 6-iron: 210-yards
  • Rors Proto 7-iron: 195-yards
  • Rors Proto 8-iron: 180-yards
  • Rors Proto 9-iron: 165-yards
  • MG4 46° SB wedge: 150-yards
  • MG4 50° SB wedge: 136-yards
  • MG4 54° SB wedge: 125-yards
  • MG4 60° LB wedge: 105-yards

As you can see, the whole way through the bag the gapping between his irons is very consistent and then when you move up to the woods it is really start to jump in distance.

How do you compare to McIlroy’s yardages? Send us a post on X and let us know. (But be honest!)
