There’s a good chance you’ve never heard of them before, but Olson putters are beginning to make a name for themselves on the PGA Tour.

It started with Scottie Scheffler, who debuted his Olson prototype at the Hero World Challenge at the end of November. It was the first time the boutique brand had a putter in the bag of a recognised pro – and what better player to debut it than the world No.1?

The result? Well, he won, of course, and that was helped by a fantastic putting display in the Bahamas, where he gained shots on the rest of the field. For someone who struggled with the flatstick in 2023, it was a noticeable shift.

A one-hit-wonder? Far from it. Next to put the brand in play was Nelly Korda at the Grant Thornton Invitational, where she teamed up with Tony Finau. Although the pair didn’t win, they were just three shots off the lead, so clearly something was clicking there, too.

It got a lot of people asking the same question. Why are pros switching to a putter brand that, to this point, was completely unknown?

Olson Putters isn’t actually a new brand, although it may be new to most of us. It was started around seven years ago, by a man named Logan Olson.

Olson works out of his shop in California, where he makes every club himself. While that process used to be reserved for those willing to spend a pretty penny on a custom flatstick, Olson recently took to Instagram to explain he’s now working with some big hitters in the game.

• What else is in Scottie Scheffler’s bag?

“For the past nine months, I’ve been invested in a project that’s close to my heart and something truly uplifting in the world of putters,” he said.

“Over that time, I’ve had the incredible privilege of collaborating with some of the world’s top-ten golfers. Together with their feedback, I’ve been able to delve even farther into putter design, focussing on crafting pieces that resonate with their unique and specific preferences and imagination.”

Although the putters that Scheffler and Korda are gaming might look like a typical Ping Anser or Scotty Cameron Newport 2, take a closer look and you’ll see they’re very different indeed.

On his website, Logan Olson describes himself as a “designer, engineer, machinist, craftsman, artist”, and when you take a close look at his creations, it’s clear to see why.

Olson makes every putter from scratch, with things like alignment lines, weighting, the sound and feel from the putter and the length of the hosel coming under the microscope. It’s subtle changes, but they make a big difference.

To tour pros, that level of detail is music to their ears. Don’t be surprised if you see more Olson putters in players’ hands in 2024.
