Wilson Staff Model CB irons review

Wilson are certainly stepping it up in recent years with their clubs, but the highlight remains their irons. Perhaps the set with the broadest appeal is the Wilson Staff Model CB irons. Let’s take a closer look.

The First Look

Just like the Wilson Staff Model Blade irons, the cavity backs are very easy on the eye.

Not a lot of offset, a thin top line, that isn’t going to strike fear into reasonable ball strikers, and premium grips and shafts. What’s not to like?

It’s almost difficult to take these out to the range and starting hitting them, as you want to keep them looking pristine, but when you do use them, you’ll see that they’re well worth hitting and potentially putting in the bag.

The Tech

These new irons have been designed alongside the new Staff Model Blades and there’s a lot of similarities in the technology.

The Wilson Staff Model CB irons also include Precise Toe Weighting and a Fluid Feel Hosel, designed for top level players and low handicappers. The new construction of these irons caters to golfers seeking increased forgiveness in their longer clubs. This makes them popular with elite level players who want something more forgiving than a blade in the longer irons. It won’t be uncommon to see a combo set with Staff Model blades and CB irons with the added forgiveness in the longer clubs. The Forged 8620 Carbon Steel ensures superior feedback, allowing players to work the ball in both directions.

“The CB irons stand out for their exceptional stability on mishits, complemented by the cavity-back design that adds a touch of forgiveness to the overall aesthetics,” said Jon Pergande, manager of Wilson Golf Club Innovation.

The bunkered Verdict

As someone who somewhat struggles with longer irons, these are the kind of clubs I would usually opt for. If I was in the market for a set of irons, these would absolutely be on my radar.

Firstly, looks of an iron are important to me, and these are stunning. You place them behind the ball and you’re almost distracted by how good they look. Compact without being small, they’re going to appeal to a wide range of golfers.

The most noticeable thing for me with these irons was the feel. They’re noticeably more responsive than the blades, with a more solid feel. Definitely not a bad thing, as you can feel when you really button one. If you want a buttery feel, you should go for the blades.

What these do give you is consistency. In my first three shots with these irons, I could have thrown a duvet over where the balls finished up. Of course, that’s not going to be the case with every shot, but they do offer decent levels of forgiveness on mishits. Certainly easier to hit than their blade counterparts.

Overall, these are a fantastic option that will appeal to a wide variety of players. All-round solid performers, I’m not surprised to see tour players already putting these in the bag.
