Masters preview

The first women’s major of the year is entering a new era, with Carlton Woods hosting the championship for the first time in its new, later, slot in the calendar.

The Chevron Championship gets underway this Thursday, and it’s a bumper field assembled in Texas for the event. Every player in the world’s top 20 is set to tee it up this week, including defending champion Jennifer Kupcho.

Despite being the defending champion, Kupcho is unlikely to come into the event with much of an advantage over her competitors, as it’s this venue’s first time hosting an event of this calibre. The Jack Nicklaus design opened in 2001 and looks set to pose a difficult test.

The event was previously at Mission Hills Country Club, famous for, amongst other things, Poppie’s Pond, where the champion would jump in after winning.

Stacy Lewis, the USA Solheim Cup captain will be playing, and had this to say on the championship’s new venue: “I think the course is going to be a great test for the players. There are a ton of run offs where you can get short sighted and have some tough up and downs. They have also set it up fairly long, so I do see that being a big part of the test.”

One of the key holes is likely to be the 18th, a reachable par-5 with a green surrounded by water. At just under 500 yards, there will be a big decision to be made here.

This is Chevron’s second year of title sponsorship of the event, which was previously the ANA Inspiration.

Nelly Korda

This venue looks set to be a tough test off the tee, and Nelly Korda is one of the best drivers of the ball in the game, so it stands to reason she’ll do well this week. Recorded two finishes of tied eighth in last year’s majors, and has four top tens in five starts this year.
