Lucas Glover is making a shock late run for the US Ryder Cup team after claiming a dramatic play-off victory at the FedEx St Jude Championship.

The 43-year-old American became the first player in his forties to win back-to-back PGA Tour titles since Vijay Singh in 2008 after edging out Patrick Cantlay in an extra-hole shootout at TPC Southwind.

Glover, the winner of last week’s Wyndham Championship, maintained the outright lead for most of the weather-delayed final round, with Cantlay, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth among the stellar names in the chasing back.

And after dropping a shot after finding water on the par-3 14th, the 2009 US Open champion roared back to seal his spot in the playoff.

And he seized the initiative on the first playoff hole, with Cantlay’s drive finding the water down the left. Glover held his nerve with a par to secure victory and a huge $3.6million winner’s cheque.

From nowhere, Glover is suddenly up to the top five in the FedEx Cup standings and can now be seriously considered as a wildcard option as one of Zach Johnson’s six captain’s picks in Rome.
