Two of the PGA Championship’s past winners will not compete at Oak Hill this week, as Martin Kaymer and Jason Dufner have withdrawn from the field.
The full crop of players has now been confirmed, and the former champions will both be absent for the second men’s major of the year.
• Why Paul Casey got a US PGA invite
Kaymer, who finished T41 at LIV Golf Tulsa last weekend, does not believe he can repeat his winning heroics of 2010, as he recovers from injury.
At Cedar Ridge Country Club, the German said: “I’m playing good. It’s just a matter of would I rather go there with the mindset of whether I can actually win a golf tournament. I don’t have that yet. I have not been practising at all the last six months.”
The 2013 Championship was at Oak Hill Country Club, and Jason Dufner lifted the title that year, but his reason for withdrawal has not been disclosed.
However, his finish at last week’s AT&T Byron Nelson was the American’s 11th missed cut in his 19 starts on the PGA Tour this season.
Dufner’s triumph in New York remains his lone major win, and he has now been replaced in the field by Sweden’s David Lingmerth.
Kaymer’s withdrawal left a spot free for Englishman Callum Tarren, while Eric Cole completed the lineup as Jason Day, who won at TPC Craig Ranch on Sunday, was already exempt.
As a result, the LIV contingent that will be present in Rochester has been reduced to just 17 players.
Recent PGA champions Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson are in the field and tied for second place at The Masters last month.
Justin Thomas returns to defend his Wannamaker title as the action begins on Thursday, while Jordan Speith will also play despite injury concerns.
