Jordan Spieth has been forced to pull out of his Texas homecoming at the AT&T Bryson Nelson, citing “severe” wrist pain.

Spieth revealed via his social media channels on Monday night that a left wrist injury has flared up and he has therefore taken medical advice to withdraw from this week’s Dallas tournament.

The three-time major champion missed the cut by eight shots at last week’s Wells Fargo Championship and his new admission over his wrist discomfort could somewhat explain that aberration in performance after a promising start to the season.

He finished second in the 2022 Bryson Nelson tournament behind defending champion K.H Lee but will play no part in front of his home fans this time around.

“Over the weekend, I had severe pain in my left wrist and had doctors confirm an injury that requires rest and limited movement,” Spieth said.

“The AT&T Bryson Nelson means the absolute world to me and I’m disappointed to miss it this week.

“Playing in front of family and friends in Dallas is one of the highlights of my year, and the staff and volunteers are second to none. I look forward to being back next year.”

Spieth’s withdrawal sparks fitness concerns ahead of the PGA Championship from May 18-21 at Oak Hill, the final major he needs to complete the fabled career grand slam.

And he has given no indication over how long he could be sidelined for, saying he “will have to evaluate my recovery week to week.”

The absence of world no.10 Spieth comes as a blow to AT&T Bryson Nelson organisers, but the event at TPC Craig Ranch still boasts a strong field, including fellow former Masters champions Scottie Scheffler and Hideki Matsuyama.

Texan Sheffler is the favourite to claim his seventh PGA Tour title in what will act as a tune-up tournament before the second major of the year in New York next week.
