Michael Block remains confident he can resurrect an opening round of 81 at the Charles Schwab Challenge by going 23 shots better.
The club pro from California looked a shadow of the player that stunned fans at last week’s PGA Championship, as the 46-year-old had a Thursday to forget at Colonial.
But Block, who has divided opinion among golf fans over the last week, still believes he can make the cut, despite sitting ten shots off the mark.

He said: “I’m not disappointed. I’m looking forward to coming out tomorrow and playing a great round, and giving it everything I have.
“I’ve shot 58, and I’ve shot a 59 in my life, and since what I had today, I wouldn’t be surprised if I did it.”
A career-low round appears to be the only way Block could play the weekend in Texas after bold claims about his game before the tournament.
Speaking on the RipperMagoo Podcast, Block claimed he would be ‘one of the world’s best’ if he could drive like Rory McIlroy.
However, Block didn’t just finish dead last on the leaderboard after the first round, he also ranked 120th in strokes gained around the green, losing over four strokes on the field.
A tie for 15th at Oak Hill last week earned the Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club teacher a stint on the PGA Tour, but he couldn’t show signs of what he had in Rochester, New York.

On his way to an 11-over-par tournament opener, Block carded seven bogeys and three double bogeys.
Block added that he could see it coming after stealing the headlines prior to the event.
He said: “It’s one of those days of golf. If you play golf, you know exactly what just happened. Even your good shots are bad, your bad shots are worse, et cetera, et cetera.
“I thought it was going to happen that third or fourth round last week at Oak Hill, and it never happened. It happened now, and I wasn’t surprised by it, to tell you the truth.”
