• Phil Mickelson won’t feel Open disappointment this week
• But admits it’ll probably get tougher to take over time
• The 46-year-old won the last US PGA held at Baltusrol
Phil Mickelson is determined not to let his Open disappointment affect his performance at this week’s US PGA Championship.
But the 46-year-old, who ran Henrik Stenson so close at Royal Troon two weeks ago, says that he’s likely to feel more disappointment as time goes on and he’s given more of a chance to reflect on the battle, which Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson both agreed was better than the Duel in the Sun.
“Over time my disappointment will probably increase” – Phil Mickelson
“I think it’s one of those things where I’ll look back over time and my disappointment will probably increase, because I think it’s the first time in my career that I have played to that level of golf and not had it be enough to win a tournament,” said Phil Mickelson, who won the US PGA Championship the last time it was held at Baltusrol in 2005.

“That’s a disappointing thing because I would have loved to have added another Claret Jug. But because we have big tournaments coming up right now and because I am playing well, I don’t want to let another really good opportunity that I have to play a PGA Championship here at Baltusrol at a course I like, while my game is sharp, and let the effects or disappointment linger.
“The idea is just to get back and start playing at that level again and hopefully it will be enough this week.”

Jordan Spieth played a practice round with Phil Mickelson on Tuesday at Baltusrol and revealed what he said to the five-time major winner.
“He didn’t bring it up,” said Spieth. “I actually on the first hole just walked over and said, ‘Phil, what a fantastic performance. It was a lot fun to watch. Really a bit unlucky. You certainly deserved it’.”

“And that’s when he said, ‘Hey, I’ve been on that side of things, Masters in ’15, and Troon even more so two weeks ago’. But then he’s seen himself on the other side of things where no one is running away with it and he wins in a close battle or he wins by a lot.
“It seemed like he was certainly content with it but certainly felt like he deserved that Claret Jug again. I think he felt like he played as well as he did in the last Open at Muirfield.”
