Sam Burns has revealed the rather sticky situation in which he found himself when Zach Johnson told him he had made his Ryder Cup team.

We’ve heard a few stories from players who got the nod – and some who didn’t – to fly to Rome to take part in the biennial slobberknocker between Europe and the USA – but this one has left us feeling rather… flushed.

You can watch the rookie tell his tale in all its gory detail here…

“We got home from Atlanta on Sunday night [after the Tour Championship],” Burns told SiriusXM Ryder Cup Radio, “and Zach had sent us all a text, ‘I’m going to call everybody in the morning.’ So of course I did not sleep Sunday night. I was so tired [from] four weeks on the road but I was just staring at the ceiling all night.

“So I get up in the morning and I say to Caroline, my wife, ‘We’ve got to get out of the house for a little bit. Let’s just go somewhere.’ So we went to a little coffee shop and sat around there for a little while. We get back to the house, and I had to go to the bathroom – like, bathroom bathroom – and literally as soon as I sit down, Justin started texting, ‘Have you heard anything yet?’ And while I’m responding to him, Zach calls me.”

He continued: “Of course I had to answer, and it’s kind of small talk and then he’s like, ‘Hey, as the captain of the US Ryder Cup team, I just want to officially invite you…’ – and I’m mid poop!

“I start crying because he just told me I’m invited, and so much is going on, so while I’m on the phone to him I’m trying to wipe and get out of there, I’ve also got to go and tell Caroline, and she comes round the corner and I gave her a thumbs up.

“It was really cool – but that’s real life right there.”

We appreciate the laughs, Sam, but as unashamed Team Europe cheerleaders, we can only hope your Ryder Cup dreams end up down the pan…
