Scottie Scheffler is a Masters champion again.

The world’s best player showed why he is exactly that with a Sunday masterclass to hold off the chasing pack at Augusta National.

With seven birdies in a ball-striking clinic, the imperious Scheffler’s final round 68 proved enough for a four-stroke victory.

Ludvig Aberg was the closest challenger. The Swede’s hopes of becoming the first debutant Masters winner since Fuzzy Zoeller were dashed when his approach found the water at the 11th.

Collin Morikawa suffered the same fate at the start of Amen Corner. His double bogey on the devilish par-4 came after an ugly six on the ninth. Max Homa’s own back nine troubles resulted in a one-over 73.

But in truth, the overwhelming pre-tournament favourite Scheffler was never going to relent.

For the second time in three years, the Texan has slipped into a Green Jacket. This second major win in Georgia is his third victory in four events after success at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The PLAYERS.

Seldom has a player shown such dominance in the modern era and Scheffler only momentarily relinquished the lead over the weekend as he tamed Augusta once more.

How much did each player win at the Masters?

How a dream became normality for golf’s newest cult hero

“I did my best to stay calm and stay patient on the course and was able to make some key shots and putts to keep my round going,” Scheffler said in the Butler Cabin.

“Ludvig played great today and made a move on me and I was fortunate to hold him off towards the end. I hadn’t hit many good iron shots which is a bit unusual for me. i hit some good ones but they weren’t ending up where they were supposed to.

“I had that bogey on seven, birdie putt on eight and going to nine it was nice to get the feeling of hitting a really well-hit shot and it set me up for the back nine.”

As well as his Green Jacket, Scheffler banks a winner’s cheque of $3.6million to take his season earnings over $15m.
