Watson won an impressive eight major championships during his illustrious career, including the Open on no fewer than five occasions – a record for an American golfer. However, the US PGA eluded him. He came closest in 1978 when he finished in a tie for second having had a large lead going into the back nine in the final round. Speaking to bunkered in 2010, he said: “It would have been nice to have all four major championships under my belt but I don’t look back on it with any regret. I didn’t take my chance to win [the PGA] but I won others. That’s the only way you can look at it.”
