Nicolai Hojgaard is one of the hottest prospects in European golf – but who is his caddie?

Born in 2001, the Dane is among the newest generation of rising stars on tour, having turned professional at the age of 17.

It was after a smart amateur career, which included being a member of the junior Ryder Cup team.

Before he knew it, Hojgaard was a multiple DP World Tour winner and winning Ryder Cup player, becoming only the fourth Danish golfer to play for Team Europe.

And the man on his bag for it was Christian Christensen.

Hojgaard’s caddie has been credited with his rise in form which helped him earn one of Luke Donald’s six wildcard picks for the 2023 European Ryder Cup team.

Nicolai Hojgaard’s caddie Christian Christensen 

At one stage, it looked like twin brother Rasmus Hojgaard might edge Nicolai to a Ryder Cup spot.

But a consistent run of form with Christensen on the bag meant he would tee it up in the biennial contest with Team USA.

In doing so, Hojgaard would follow in the footsteps of Thomas Bjorn, Soren Hansen and Thorbjorn Olesen.

Christian Christensen has been Nicolai Hojgaard’s regular looper since the Hero Cup in January, a match between a Continental European team and a team representing Great Britain and Ireland.

Hojgaard showed his matchplay prowess that week, finishing joint top scorer in Abu Dhabi with 3.5 points from four matches.

And he had the calming influence of Christensen on the bag, who he continued to have strong results with for the remainder of 2023.

Hojgaard finished tied fifth at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, the Ryder Cup venue in Rome for the 2023 Ryder Cup.

He won at Marco Simone in 2021, but another strong finish with Christensen by his side proved his credentials once more to Luke Donald.

Christensen and Hojgaard have built a stronger connection throughout the 2024 season, after strong performances including a T23 finish in his first ever Open.

Before linking up with Christensen, Hojgaard had Lee Warne on the bag last year, who oversaw his development as he became one of the stars of the Wentworth-based circuit.

Warne is a former Greenkeeper at Wentworth and before working with Hojgaard was on the bag of ex-Ryder Cup star and multiple DP World Tour winner Alex Noren.
