American phenom Rose Zhang had only ever had one coach. That was until 2024.

Since breaking onto the LPGA Tour with a debut win in 2023, Zhang has already finished top ten in multiple majors championships.

The California-born golfer also made her Solheim Cup debut in a draw with Team Europe at Finca Cortesin in Spain.

With such a promising future ahead of her, Zhang stepped into the big leagues with her trusted swing coach by her side.

But the pair knew the day would come when Zhang would have to move on, and so she has done that.

Zhang began playing golf when she was nine years old and two years later, she teamed up with long-term coach George Pinnell.

Her incredible talent was evident early on, as she turned up at his range, possessing a fluid motion that Pinnell recognised as special.

He told Golf.com: “From the day I met her, there was a maturity about her that you don’t often see at that age.”

A vastly experienced coach who has helped the likes of Anthony Kim and Kevin Na on their way to success, Pinnell’s instruction has accounted for over 350 tournament wins at professional, college and junior level.

Working with Trackman since 2008, Pinnell has become one of the most experienced and well-respected coaches in golf.

As a member of the PGA, he studied the golf swing under the direct tutoring of noted instructors like Butch Harmon, Randy Smith and Hank Haney.

Emerging talents have turned to Pinnell over the years, as his early students were Jay Choi and David Oh, future collegiate All-Americans.

As his name got out, Mi Hyun Kim asked him for lessons, as did the emerging amateur star, Kristen Park.

Now Zhang is his latest prodigy, he has been there for the defining moments in her career so far.

In 2023, she was the number one ranked female golfer in the World Amateur Golf Ranking for 141 weeks, the most of any player in history.

But ahead of the 2024 Chevron Championship – the first of the season – Zhang told Golfweek that she has hired Todd Anderson as her new coach.

Anderson is the director of instruction at the PGA Tour’s Performance Center at TPC Sawgrass and has taken the reigns from Pinnell.

“We’re still so close,” Zhang said of her relationship with Pinnell. “He’ll be a mentor. He’s seen my swing for the past nine years.”

Zhang’s new coach was recommended by her team and it’s understood the pair got straight to work on the LPGA Tour winner’s short game and putting.

“He’s is very straightforward, which I appreciate,” she said. “He has a very genuine passion for helping players get better. And he’s very open-minded, so he’s not exactly very egocentric and is willing to hear what you feel and what your thoughts are.

“So that open mindedness helps a lot. Because, for me, I think it’s important for the player to understand what he or she is doing. And the coach aids to that.”

Anderson also works with Billy Horschel.
