Valero Texas Open 2022: Preview, betting tips & how to watch

It’s almost time for the first major championship of the year, but before we get to Augusta National, it’s a quick stop in San Antonio for the Valero Texas Open.

This is a big year for the event, as it celebrates its 100th anniversary as a stop on the PGA Tour. It was originally known as simply The Texas Open back in 1922, but Valero bought the naming rights back in 2002. 

In its long history, past winners have included Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer and most recently, Jordan Spieth. Zach Johnson successfully defended his title here in 2009, while Justin Leonard is a three-time winner here. Another player with a strong record in Texas is 2016 champion Charley Hoffman, who has finished runner-up in the last two events.

This year, the tournament are proud that 21 players from the Masters field have committed to playing in Texas, with Rory McIlroy, Tony Finau and Robert MacIntyre amongst the notable names.

It’s played over The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio, a Greg Norman design. It’s far from easy, but it’s not going to beat up the field before they fly off to Augusta, Georgia. Although players will be hoping to win in Texas, several will have perhaps more than one eye on The Masters the following week.

Valero Texas Open: How can I watch it on TV?

The event runs from Thursday to Sunday, and it’ll be on Sky Sports Golf throughout the week. On Thursday and Friday, with main coverage starting at 3pm. If you want to get ahead of the game though, red button action is on from 1.30pm. Over the weekend, main coverage is at 8pm, with the red button showing the early groups from 5pm.
