Along with their new range of drivers, PXG has launched their latest fairway wood, the Black Ops. On my visit to the PXG London South store, I was fitted for the driver and fairway wood. I’m a big fan of the new driver, here’s what I thought about the fairway wood.
Fairway woods are something that a lot of golfers struggle with and I include myself in that bracket. Currently, I have a 3-wood in the bag, but as I explained to Jack Venn, who was my fitter at the store, I’d quite like something with a little more loft, but that was still going to fly longer than my longest iron.
So, I was very pleased to get a 4-wood in my hands. Immediately, I knew this was a club I was going to get on with. It looks great in hand, and behind the ball, that extra bit of loft was clear to see. Overall, a great looking bit of kit.

As you’d expect, the PXG Black Ops fairway wood shares a lot of the same tech as the driver.
The first thing to know about is the high-strength stainless steel face. Although this face is made with strength and durability in mind, it’s also 12.5% thinner than in the previous PXG model, which is going to make it more flexible, producing faster ball speeds.
That, along with a squared face design, increases the surface area of the fairway wood, making it more forgiving. More forgiveness, coupled with faster ball speeds, higher launch and lower spin, all makes for great performing woods.
The crown of the PXG Black Ops fairway wood is made entirely from high-grade carbon-fibre. This is a lightweight material that allows weight to be shifted low and to the back of the club, meaning the centre of gravity is lower, making it more forgiving.
Similarly to the drivers, you’ll find the Precision Weighting Technology, which means these clubs can be adjusted to suit your preference in shot shape.
In a nutshell, the PXG Black Ops fairway woods are excellent. As someone who struggles to get my current 3-wood in the air, it was great to get a club that is legitimately easy to launch high.
That, along with the low spin that these produce, mean I’m a huge fan. I wouldn’t be surprised if my new PXG Black Ops 4-wood, which is set to arrive soon, is in my bag for 2024.
