They have received a huge technology upgrade – but how did we get on with them and would they suit you? Find out in our TaylorMade P790 irons review…

If you already love the TaylorMade P790 irons, then you’re about to love them even more. The P790s have always been a superb choice for golfers of all levels, but now they are even better.

Not only do they feature a new AI internal design that has been individually applied to each iron, the 2023 range boasts the best existing features, like the SpeedFoam Air, the forged 4140 high-speed face, and the Thru-Slot Speed Pocket.

If you want to know how that will improve your game then you’re in the right place, as the larger sweet spot on the face will give you that premium feel, which protects ball speed low off the face.

Looks-wise, the back of the club has changed somewhat. I love this satin strip down the middle of the iron. It makes them look super premium.

The golf ball really fizzes off the clubface, and in terms of feel it is exactly as you would expect from a TaylorMade iron. The hollow body design and the SpeedFoam Air give each shot an incredibly satisfying acoustic, too.

And if you’re a proper gear nerd like me, what makes the P790 so good is not only it its rewarding forgiveness across the face, or even explosive ball speeds and distance, but rather the all-new AI optimised internal design.

TaylorMade have individually designed each iron through the bag with their FLTD CG and Mass Optimisation methods, allowing tungsten weighting to be moved internally so the CG will be its lowest in the long irons, and get progressively higher into the shorter irons – the result of which is impressive consistency and control through the bag.

The Mass Optimisation also changes between each iron with an added sound bar. Every gram of weight is strategically placed inside, so it allows the sound bar to be moved from the four-iron down to the seven, gradually moving closer to the centre in the longer irons.

You will find that this helps deliver a stunning feel off the face and helps that all important consistency.

Consistency has come to be expected from the P790 range and that comes from a new thick-thin back wall design. It creates additional mass saving, with a honeycomb pattern on the internal plate. That allows weight to move towards the perimeter of the irons, improving the forgiveness of each strike and better CG positioning.

Most importantly, all these internal changes contribute to creating the best P790 to date. I am a huge fan. The consistency, forgiveness and dispersion are incredibly impressive, and the irons feel and sound great in each shot. What more can you ask for?

So who would the TaylorMade P790 irons suit?

Well, they are great for low-handicap players who need a more forgiving option without losing distance, and great for mid- to high-handicap players in search of distance and tighter dispersion with added forgiveness. In summary: the TaylorMade P790 is an iron for all abilities.
