WITB: Wyndham Clark’s US Open winning bag

Wyndham Clark successfully held off some of the world’s best to claim his first major victory last night.

The 29-year-old produced a stellar display over Los Angeles Country Club, punctuated with a classy two-putt on the 72nd hole to wrap up a one-shot victory.

That came after Clark made things more interesting than he might have liked. The new US Open champion dropped shots on both the 15th and 16th holes, cutting his lead over Rory McIlroy down to a single shot.

But, Clark’s solid play coupled with McIlroy not making a birdie in his final 17 holes meant that there was only going to be one winner this week.

The putter Clark employed was his strongest suit throughout the week. Over the four rounds he gained strokes on the field in every category, but a gain of 1.81 strokes with the flatstick was where he picked up the most.

That, coupled with hitting 69% of greens over the challenging layout at Los Angeles Country Club was recipe for success for the man from Denver, Colorado.

At the top end of the bag, things were firing too. Clark averaged 325 yards off the tee, while hitting 71% of LACC’s fairways.

In the bag, Clark has a mix of brands, as well as some new and some slightly older gear. The Titleist TSi3 driver he used was key to his impressive power fades, while the almost ten-year-old Odyssey Jailbird Versa putter proved invaluable.
